Finding Qualified Workers Overseas

January 27th, 2009 | by FS |

Finding good workers is a reality of doing business and being profitable in an ever competitive economy. While some businesses actually move their operations overseas to save money and fill hard to fill jobs, some just recruit foreign workers to fill jobs in the US. One area where recruiting overseas became popular due to the lack of specialized workers was the software development arena. Foreign software specialists helped companies in the US fill hiring needs and had the skills and knowledge to help the company meet its goals. As companies competed for talented, US based workers, hiring foreign software specialists helped the software companies stay profitable.

Hiring foreign software specialists became a favorite hiring practice in the late 1990’s as companies prepared for the Year 2000 computer conversion. With low unemployment rates and a glut of job vacancies to fill, foreign software specialists filled needs for companies working to secure their computer systems in anticipation of computer glitches.  These specialists worked on computer network and software development upgrades.

Hiring overseas workers is a great way for companies to fulfill their hiring needs. Offering higher wages and better benefits than their home countries’ employment market, foreign workers compete readily for job vacancies.  Organizations hiring foreign workers report success with recruiting and hiring from foreign countries.

My only problem with this is that I don’t want to contribute to the overall unemployment in the US. On Monday alone this week 45,000 jobs were lost. I am directly affected as my wife was recently laid off, and is having a hard time finding another job. If more people kept operations in house we might not have such a horrible problem with unemployment. Just my two cents.

I agree! There are plenty of qualified people here that would take just about any wage. Heck, some teens are plenty qualified and would work as an intern or for minimum wage!

I’m an engineer for a big company and we hire a lot of foreign software specialists rather than hire in the U.S. Know why? rising college costs here in the U.S. are wiping out the potential for many bright kids to go to school here. They can go to school overseas then come back (there’s lost US revenue) or we just hire abroad. It’s a mess.

I agree with Kal, the rising costs have made our children stop going to school and also have made them lazy always watching tv. To get someone motivated today you almost have to bribe them. In third world countries, they’ll do just about anything to feed their families.

Don’t overlook the fact that not all overseas employees come from third world countries! I lived in Europe for a long time and knew a lot of people that secured work for American countries; it’s a very viable option for a lot of people.
